Simplifying complex rational expressions doesnโt have to feel messy. In this lesson, students learn how to clear fractions in one clean step by multiplying through by the least common multiple of all denominators. Instead of working through the numerator and denominator separately, theyโll see how this single move streamlines the entire process and reveals the structure of the expression.
This lesson connects directly to what students learned in Algebra 1 about complex fractions but takes it further by introducing variables and domain restrictions. Along the way, students practice identifying restrictions from both the original denominators and any new denominators that appear during simplification.
By the end, students will be able to:
Clear fractions efficiently using the least common multiple of denominators.
Simplify and factor rational expressions accurately.
Identify all domain restrictions, even those that appear during simplification.
