About This Lesson

In this lesson, we are introduced to the complex number system and the essential role of the imaginary unit i. We begin by defining i as the square root of negative one and then show how every complex number can be written in the form a plus b i, where a is the real part and b is the imaginary part. Students will see that the complex system actually includes all the numbers they already know, from whole numbers and integers to fractions and real numbers, making it a natural extension of the number system.
